AUBURN*The Auburn football team conducted its second scrimmage of preseason drills Saturday, running approximately 70 plays, in very humid conditions. Originally slated for Jordan-Hare Stadium, the scrimmage was held at the intramural fields and concluded with a scripted session of two-minute offense.
"This was one of the few hot practices that we have had," Auburn head coach Tommy Tuberville said. "I think our guys pushed through it hard. There were a lot of good things."
Sophomore quarterback Brandon Cox completed 13-of-19 passes for 188 yards and three touchdowns while senior wide receiver Devin Aromashodu had three catches for a team-high 46 yards and one touchdown.
On the opening series of the scrimmage, Cox drove the first-team offense on a six-team, 70-yard scoring drive, capped by an 18-yard touchdown toss Aromashodu. Cox completed all four pass attempts on the drive, good for 72 yards.
"Obviously, watching the quarterback and the offense move, we are starting to get some rhythm and make some plays," Tuberville said. "They are not going against the second-team defense*this was the first-team defense so they are earning what they get.
Cox also hit fullback Jake Slaughter from 6 yards and freshman receiver Prechae Rodriquez from 15 yards during a series of short drives that started on the opponents' 15 yard line.
The Tigers' other offensive scores came on a Kenny Irons 5-yard run, which capped a 6-play, 40-yard drive, and a Calvin Booker 15-yard touchdown pass to freshman tight end Gabe McKenzie.
Redshirt freshman Tristan Davis led all rushers with 36 yards on 16 carries, while Irons had 11 yards on nine attempts. Carl Stewart added 10 yards on seven carries.
"We are still making a few mistakes mentally on defense and that has given us a few problems," Tuberville said. "We have to get some guys back out there healthy, but it was good to see some consistency out of the offense, especially since last spring we didn't do a lot."
Freshman linebacker Tray Blackmon tallied a team-high five tackles while six other defenders*Quentin Groves, David Irons, Steve Gandy, Kevin Hobbs, T.J. Jackson and Josh Thompson*had four stops each. Thompson had 3.5 tackles for loss and one quarterback sack, while Octavious Balkcom had two quarterback sacks.
"It was a good effort," Tuberville said. "In the kicking game, John Vaughn was on and he continues to get better. We still have a lot of work to do, but hopefully today will be a scrimmage that we can get a lot from. The film will really tell the tale so well will know a little more tomorrow."
In the kicking game, the Tigers' place kickers were a perfect four-of-four. Junior John Vaughn hit from 51, 40, and 42 yards, while freshman Zach Kutch hit from 43 yards in his only attempt.
Auburn will practice Sunday afternoon, beginning at 4:30 p.m. CDT on the intramural fields.
