Tennessee opened its third week of preseason camp looking rested and rejuvenated during a 21/2-hour practice Monday at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. The Vols were idle Sunday after a Saturday scrimmage and seemed better able to fight through a very warm afternoon.
"I was really happy today that the kids pushed through as well as they did," head coach Phillip Fulmer said. "Everything certainly wasn't nearly perfect in what we did but the head index was as high as we've had it and they really busted their rears to finish strong. Camp is a journey. We're hopefully going to improve every day we're out here and not waste any days. Today was a good day for us."
Secondary play continues to be a point of emphasis for the coaching staff, especially after Saturday's scrimmage resulted in an average gain of 15.5 yards per completion. "There were lots of things out of the scrimmage that we're really going to have to work on to get better," Fulmer said. "We had a little bit of movement on the depth chart with Jonathan Wade moving up. He's in a real battle there (at cornerback) with Roshaun Fellows. And there are battles going on at the safety positions, as well as the backup tailback position and center. I was glad to see Rob Smith and Cody Douglas jump in there and get some full-speed work (at center). That allows us the depth we're going to need down the road with (Richie) Gandy's situation and (David) Ligon's situation."
