hold on to defeat Central Florida, a team that had lost 16 consecutive games. ADVANTAGE: Dawgs.
FACT: Gamecocks ground game was pathetic against Central Florida. Dawgs front seven is undoubtedly superior to the Central Florida front seven. If the Gamecocks couldn’t run against the Knights, why would anyone one expect them to be able to run against the Dawgs front seven? ADVANTAGE: Dawgs
FACT: Central Florida’s passing game clicked against what was supposed to be an excellent Gamecock secondary. Georgia’s QB D. J. Shockley played like an All American against an average to above average Bronco pass defense. The Dawg receivers, who had limited experience heading into this season, played well although not perfect. ADVANTAGE: Dawgs (slightly)
FACT: Dawgs have at least three excellent tailbacks all capable of surpassing 100 yards in a game and a QB that is a definite running threat. Gamecocks played well against the Knights ground game. ADVANTAGE: Dawgs (slightly)
FACT: Dawgs defense reeked havoc upon the veteran, respected Bronco QB. They forced him into 6 turnovers. Gamecock QB will be starting just his second game ever and first game on the road. His job is likely to be even more daunting because the Dawg fans will be up for this game more so than ever because Spurrier is the head coach of the Gamecocks. Between the Hedges will be a very difficult environment for the Gamecock QB.. ADVANTAGE: Dawgs.
FACT: Georgia QB Shockley is an escape artist and excellent runner. Four of the five Carolina defensive ends are converted linebackers. Even veteran defensive ends have trouble staying disciplined and keep from getting pinched inside. If these converted defensive ends get caught inside and lose contain, Shockley will have a field day running and completing passes after breaking contain. ADVANTAGE: Dawgs
Logic says the Dawgs will win this game convincingly by a score of about 33-14.
Now, let’s look at the psychology of the game.
FACT OR FICTION: Dawgs easy victory over the Broncos may have swollen the Dawgs’ heads, which produced over confidence and a feeling of contentment.
FACT OR FICTION: The 18-point betting spread may have generated even more over confidence on the part of the Dawgs.
FACT OR FICTION: Gamecocks blowing an 18-point lead, then having to hold on, to claim a hard-fought victory over the Knights may have convinced them that they had to work extra hard to be able to compete with the Dawgs.
FACT OR FICTION: The 18-point spread may have insulted the Gamecocks and Spurrier so much that they will play lights out against the Dawgs and Spurrier will coach one of his best games. Because most of the previous games have been tightly contested, the Gamecocks may be really peeved at the point spread.
FACT OR FICTION: Georgia QB Shockley will never match his performance against the Broncos again this season. If he falters early against the Gamecocks, his confidence will drop.
Psychology gives the Gamecocks a 26-20 victory.
Will logic or psychology rule the day? Any sane prognosticator would predict an easy Georgia victory. Keep in mind that there are generally more upsets and close calls in week one than in any other week of the season. A few seasons ago, the Gamecocks struggled to defeat lowly Louisiana Lafayette in Columbia, then defeated a ranked Virginia team on the road 31-7.
Call me insane because I’m going with the Gamecocks 26-20. Just a gut feeling and nothing more.
