SOUTH CAROLINA VS AUBURN
Article by Larry Phipps
Sep 30, 2005
Losing starting QB Blake Mitchell may have been the best thing that could happen to the Gamecocks. With Mitchell at QB, the Tiger defense doesn't have to worry much about the Gamecock ground game and could afford to drop eight in pass coverage. With projected starter Antonio Hefner at QB, the Tiger linebackers are going to have to be more run conscious because of Hefner’s good running ability. Hefner’s running ability may help the Carolina tailbacks get untracked. The question is whether or not Hefner can make plays in the passing game.

After watching film of Carolina’s previous four games, the Tigers should feel that they can dominate Carolina on both sides of the ball. From all reports, TB Kenny Irons (a former Gamecock) is expecting a big day.

This game is a contest between a team that has been embarrassed by its performances in three of its four games (Carolina) against one that should feel very confident of victory (Auburn). Will the Gamecocks get off their backs and show some spine? Will the Tigers be overconfident? The answers to those question won’t be known until the end of the game.

Auburn is likely to see a different offensive scheme this week and how well they adjust during the game will be a factor.

Logic dictates Auburn to win by something like 33-13. If Carolina QB Hefner plays well and can help establish an effective ground game, the game could be much closer.
