FLORIDA VS ALABAM
Article by Larry Phipps
Sep 30, 2005
these two teams are the top two defensive teams in the SEC statistically. Florida is #1 and Alabama is #2. However both teams are averaging more than 400 yards and 29 points per game. Something has to give in this one. As one looks over all the SEC stats, these teams are very close to each other.

Florida has had a little more difficult schedule. Plus, the Gators have played a pressure-packed game against and good team (Tennessee) and came out victorious, while the Tide has not. That experience should be helpful in this game which figures to be closely contested.

Being that both are undefeated, they are in the hunt for the SEC title. Both are trying to return to their glory years and victory could provide confirmation that one or the other is back on track. Therefore, both teams should be fired up and ready to play at the top of their games.

The young Tide offensive line has played very well thus far, but will be facing the best defensive front seven they have seen to date. The battle between the Tide offensive line and the Gator defensive front seven will likely determine the outcome. The Tide offensive line must be able to open lanes for the running game, which is something a good Vol offensive line could not do. Tennessee’s ground game netted just 66 yards against the Gators. Although Tide QB Croyle is a veteran, good player, he needs the threat of a ground game to keep the Gator defense honest.

The Tide defense has the overall team speed and enough experience in the secondary to combat Meyer’s misdirection offense. It is good enough also to stymie a Gator ground game that has been less than impressive thus far.

I believe the Tide players, especially the seniors, want this game more than the Gators and will find a way to win. Alabama 20-17.
